Ava – tastic!

Our lovely Sophie Merry and GV2 Trinity College, have collaborated to create a unique dance experience for the upcoming BIORHYTHM exhibition in the Science Gallery.

Sophie has been working as a director and  dancer with GV2 (the Graphics Vision and Visualisation Lab in Trinity College) to create a digital avatar of herself, which will form part of an exhibit entitled “Biodancer”.

GV2, is an internationally renowned group dedicated to carrying out leading edge research in computer graphics, computer vision and all aspects of visual computing. The “Biodancer” team is led by Martin Prazak (a PhD student in GV2, performing research into human motion capture and synthesis) and Carol O’Sullivan (the Professor of Visual Computing in TCD and a leading researcher in the inter-disciplinary field of perception based graphics, real-time rendering, animation, human and crowd simulation).

Martin has applied GV2’s cutting edge research on motion capture and editing technology,  to create a natural interface which connects members of  the public to the exhibit, linking them directly to the avatar of Sophie.   Their movements are combined with hers to create a unique dance and rhythm experience.

This is all done to “36 Days” original music written and produced by Deadbots, Remix and additional production by Hystereo.

Here’s an interview with Sophie explaining a bit more about Biodancer.

BIORHYTHM, the Science Gallery’s summer exhibition, is an exploration of music and the body.    It will take an up close and personal look at how we respond to, interact with and create music and sound.  As well as “Biodancer”, it also features exhibits ranging from a sonic bed to musical instruments that respond to your heartbeat.

In tandem with the exhibition, there will be a wide range of performances, experiments and workshops, part of the exhibition will also be brought to Electric Picnic.  BIORHYTHM will run from July 2nd to October 1st,  for full information and a schedule of events go to : http://www.sciencegallery.com/biorhythm
